Valentine’s Day: Gifts To Grow

Valentine's Day Gift

If you’re looking to really impress your special someone this Valentine’s Day then why not show your love with a gift that continues to grow and flourish from year to year?

Chocolates, perfume and cut blooms make for great gifts however they do fade and run out rather quickly. To show your loved one how much you truly care, there is no better way to show and display your love than a beautiful garden plant. A gift that they can grow, care for and nurture within the garden, there are so many different plants that you can choose from to match their exact tastes and style. Effortlessly integrated into the cutting garden, we’ve picked a few of our floral favourites that will guarantee to a put a smile on their face.

Rosa

Historically regarded as a symbol of love, roses are a popular choice on Valentine’s Day due to their beauty and wonderful fragrance. Red roses in particular are a top pick on Valentine’s Day, with deep and vibrant red shades known traditionally to reflect passion, acting as a strong form of expression.

A glorious English shrub rose, Rosa Sir John Betjeman makes for a magnificent Valentine’s gift. Available potted or in bare root form, this rose (bred by David Austin) is a garden delight that thrives best when planted in an area that receives full sunshine. Incredibly vibrant and boasting an abundance of cherry-red petals, a wonderful fact that we love about this specific rose is that the colour of the blooms become more intense with age.

If you’re looking for a lighter and slightly softer palette, then Rosa Emily Brontë is another striking rose. Available potted or bare root, this rose is a wonderful gift that boasts a beautiful palette of pale pink and apricot hues. Diffusing a delightfully fruity scent throughout the garden, this English shrub rose blooms beautifully from summer and throughout autumn too.

If you pick to gift a climbing rose, sweet peas or another plant that requires an extra touch of support, then the Cotswold Obelisks from Muntons Traditional Plant Supports are a good year-round structure for climbing plants and interest for the garden. Helping to support a healthy and strong structure, these obelisks are fabulous for encouraging optimum growth and also make a beautiful addition to your garden scene.

Lamprocapnos spectabilis

Previously known as Dicentra spectabilis, Asian bleeding heart is a charming perennial that is the perfect plant to gift on Valentine’s Day due to its unique heart-shaped blooms. Blooming beautifully throughout spring and summer, Lamprocapnos is a magnificent plant that is best settled and established in a location that receives partial shade.

Myosotis sylvatica

Better known as garden forget-me-nots, Myosotis sylvatica are wonderfully charming and romantic garden perennials. Flowering in both spring and summer, forget-me-nots produce delicate and dainty blue blooms that are wonderful for brightening up a variety of garden spaces. Celebrated as a symbol of both true love and devotion, forget-me-nots carry a beautiful message and are a wonderful plant to gift your loved one on Valentine’s Day.

Lathyrus odoratus

Last but not least we have Lathyrus odoratus, most commonly known as Sweet peas. Grown from seed, sweet peas are beautiful annuals that can be grown within the cutting garden to provide you with an array of beautifully fragrant and freshly cut blooms. Easy to grow and available in a variety of different colours, sweet peas are superb for adding a burst of colour throughout the garden and are also incredibly valuable for attracting bumble bees and other pollinators into the garden.
