Life at The Garden Barn:

The Garden Barn is the hub of The Oxfordshire Gardener. Under the eaves of this gorgeously designed converted barn we gather to exchange news, pore over plans and set the day’s agenda. Set overlooking our own courtyard garden, complete with raised vegetable beds, flower beds and seasonal container displays, the view opens out beyond the garden gates into the rolling meadows and wooded ridges, making it a truly inspirational place to meet in the mornings or work on training days.

Experienced Gardener

Role Summary:

Duties & Responsibilities:

We are looking for an experienced gardener to join us in the nurturing and development of our portfolio of beautiful town and country gardens, including estate gardens of particular historic note.

Reporting to the Operations Manager/Head Gardener, you’ll be helping with maintenance of gardens, such as pruning and care of mixed and herbaceous borders, compost and mulching treatments, as well as soft landscaping projects, like the installation of planting schemes including trees, shrubs, kitchen gardens and herbaceous plants. You’ll be helping to cut hedges, provide skillful specialist pruning and mowing our fine lawns. You’ll also take ownership of specific gardens, ensuring the highest standards are maintained and that gardens are filled with healthy, beautiful plants for clients to enjoy.

The successful candidate will be able to work within a team or by themselves, undertaking professional garden care and realising planting schemes alongside the landscaping team. You will have a significant role in implementing design projects and mastering soft landscaping plans, whilst working alongside an award-winning Chelsea designer on a number of projects that have been commissioned.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • A recognised horticultural qualification to RHS Level 2 standard or equivalent experience
  • Ability to work both in a team and on your own, when required
  • Confidence to provide appraisals of garden and advise clients
  • Have proven practical gardening/horticulture experience, as well as a strong knowledge of plants
  • Competence with machinery/equipment use as required for Health and Safety compliance.
  • Motivation & pride in maintaining a consistently high standard of work
  • Excellent communication skills

Essential:

  • At least 2 years+ prior experience in providing garden maintenance 
  • RHS level 2 or Horticulture Diploma
  • Full, clean drivers licence
  • Experienced in use of power tools
  • Hedge trimming experience
  • Good plant knowledge
  • Ability to work autonomously
  • Strong teamwork skills
  • Mowing and edging to professional standards
  • Fit, strong, and healthy, capable of lifting equipment/plants to health and safety standards

Beneficial: 

  • Experience managing kitchen gardens or similar productive gardens including selection of varieties, crop rotation, extension and maximisation of fresh produce availability.
  • Experience managing cutting gardens or similar productive gardens including selection of varieties, extension and maximisation of fresh bloom availability.
  • Experience in implementing soft landscaping projects, such as installing new planting schemes or planning sympathetic additions to existing planted areas. 
  • Any hard landscaping skills or experience
  • Comfortable with use of mobile technology for field-based reporting and general communication apps

Job Type: Full-time or part-time roles available

Salary: £22,000 -£25,000 per annum

Gardens & Office Coordinator

Role Summary:

Overseeing and providing support to the horticultural & landscaping team, management team and customers to deliver garden maintenance and landscape design projects for The Oxfordshire Gardener and Bloomsbury Home.

Day-to-day diary management, customer service and general administration. You must be confident in managing a dynamic, fluid range of demands with good ability to prioritise and the drive to action, resolving requests and requirements promptly.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Reporting to the Marketing and Business Manager, you will support the delivery of regular, scheduled garden maintenance, garden design and landscaping services.

  • Taking a initial client briefs, managing on new enquiries, maintaining and reporting on new business

  • Preparing client quotes

  • Ordering stock items, materials and equipment, as specified by the management team and replacing everyday consumables and tools, as requested by the team and/or Senior Gardener (equipment manager).

  • Organising and managing stock & asset records in conjunction with the Senior Gardener (equipment manager).

  • Supplier management – setting up accounts, managing suppliers, procuring deliveries on time and on budget.

  • Diary management – Coordinating internal and external meetings, anticipating the priorities of the management team. Preparing agendas and briefing documents.

  • CRM and email management – monitoring the shared, generic email account, responding, highlighting urgent items for action, filing inbox. Ensuring that important emails and communications are recorded on the CRM and client/supplier records kept up-to-date.

  • Bloomsbury Home Customer Service – answering general queries, order queries, liaising with despatch to ensure orders swiftly and correctly delivered.

  • Assisting with and maintaining Bloomsbury Home supplier communications/records and stock records.

General Support:

  • Providing assistance to the wider team, as and when time permits.

  • Updating, maintaining and providing assistance with day-to-day administrative and HR documents (annual leave requests, sickness and absence forms/records, expense claims etc)

Qualifications & Skills: 

Essential:

  • Knowledge and excellent experience in use of standard office software and apps (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc.
  • Experienced in use of CRM (customer records management) systems.
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) time management and organisational skills.
  • High level of enthusiasm and interpersonal skills.

Beneficial: 

  • Prior experience in providing support to marketing, design, digital, e-commerce and/or retail based businesses.
  • Experience or interest in gardening, interior/exterior design, home & garden products.
  • Experience in use of Google Workspace.

Desirable:

  • Previous experience in field-based team & service coordination
