Maximising & Using Space Effectively

Whether you have a small or large garden, planting a pot or a raised bed, it’s always key to maximise and use the space we are given in the most effective way.

Not only can we fit more into our garden to enjoy, but also we can transform courtyard areas and terraces into cosy, chic and elegant spaces. Envision a hidden secret retreat area in your landscape with warm twinkly lights and flowering fruit trees just for you to absorb the peace and quiet that everyday life lacks.

Discover how our garden designers can show you the best ways to maximise the space in your garden in ways you may never of thought of before…

Arches & Trellis

Both these structures are a great way of adding level, architecture and height to your garden. They also add a sense of sophistication especially when used as an entrance statement with scented climbers winding round for your guests to walk through and indulge their senses. Some of our soft landscaper’s top scented climbers to use are Clematis armandii (which will bloom in either sun or shade with pale pink and white flowers fresh scent) and Climbing honeysuckle (which has a sweet fragrance). Our highly skilled horticultural team can help you decide and construct the perfect archway or trellis design for you.

Mirrors

‘Mirror mirror on the wall, who has the best garden of them all…?’ – Charlotte McCaughan-Hawes, House&Garden

This is a strong, tranquil and visual feature that not only draws in the light but also adds depth to your landscaped area especially when mirroring a green scenery of a lawn or bold foliage. The illusion can be created using big or small, round or square mirrors, hung up or on a surface. A trend that is in keeping with time.

Decking & patio areas

Within a smaller space, it’s always interesting to introduce different levels and textures. You could have a wooden decking area holding an oval (oval or rectangular furniture gives the deception that the space is bigger than it is) table and chairs and then a short wooden staircase leading up to a second level with an area of textured green lawn and vibrant flower beds soaking in the sun. Or you could transform an area of grass outside your back door into a stone patio terrace for alfresco dining and botanical cocktails! Discuss the endless ideas with one of our in-house landscaping team.

Enhance white

A white canvas for endless possibilities… white is always associated with light, purity and freshness and so it’s an ideal colour to use in your garden to emphasise these exact ideas in a smaller space! When you paint a wall white, space naturally appears more open and on a larger scale and so a perfect background colour for a dainty courtyard area. However, as white is also one of the last colours we can see as the evenings draw in, they are a great flower colour to add depth to your landscape if a white wall is too bold for your taste. But if you are loving the white vibe then a mood garden is absolutely for you. This is a garden that has white flowers planted that are then illuminated at night for our eyes. Our planting design team of experts can help you construct the ultimate white garden.

Repurposing a ladder

Sustainability has always been a key element to push into our gardens and so reuse one of those old, tattered step ladders that you’re about to throw out and paint it, replace some screws and add some plant pots to create the perfect rustic feature that uses only a limited amount of space. This also adds ease to your gardening as watering becomes easier and bending down to lower levels is avoided. It’s a great feature and something different from the norm.

Repetition of one key feature

Repetition of a key feature like a pathway can help create greater symmetry in your garden which further composes an illusion of size. A wooden stepping pathway running in a circular motion with light stone gravel filling the gaps would be a favourable addition to a rustic and dainty garden, or stone stepping stones running from the inside to outside building for a luxurious & modern finish. Discuss with our landscaping team to decide what material would be the best fit for your garden.

Ponds for wildlife

Maintaining biodiversity is another gardens goal and a pond is a perfect way to do this! Installing a pond will be like a magnet to local wildlife and you will gain yourself a front row seat to watching nature. They provide food, water and a homely area for frogs, insects and birds. As Tesco’s says, every little helps – don’t be misled into thinking that you need a large space to have a pond as , even smaller ponds will allow you to play your part! You could even have several small ponds dotted throughout your landscape as feature areas with subtle lighting and gravel walkways.

Kitchen Garden: Raised Beds

If you are searching for a space saver, something to make gardening easier and a great place to grow fresh fruit and vegetables then this idea is just for you! Using sleepers (new or recycled) to create garden beds has recently become a huge trend jumper so why not join? Planting in raised beds means that you can plant them in rows closer together without needing a pathway to walk between them. They also help minimise plants becoming too rogue as their root systems are contained to onearea. Use our in house landscaping team to design a kitchen garden just for you and even add extra features for your delight like a greenhouse or irrigation system.

High yield plants

With limited space, you want a big impact. When growing vegetables you want to use the same space but produce a high yield and that’s exactly what you can do with tomato, cucumber and potato plants. So not only will you be able to enjoy some homegrown vegetables but so will your neighbours! Talk to our Horticulturalists to find out what else they can grow for you to maximise the space you’re using!
