7 Garden Tasks for July

garden tasks july

July is a busy yet glorious month within the garden.

Whilst we watch our landscapes flourishing and unfurling in the summer sunshine, there are a range of important tasks that we need to complete to sustain the most glorious and vibrant gardenscapes. From buxus care to kitchen garden to-do lists, let’s explore what our horticulturalists are currently getting up to in our gardens this July.

Discover 7 essential garden tasks to get underway with this month.

1. Cut back hardy geraniums

Throughout July, our horticulturalists advise cutting back hardy geraniums as this is the most effective way to encourage new growth. Make sure to cut these down to ground level once your blooms have finished flowering.

2. Rose care

To ensure that your garden roses flourish beautifully all summer long it is important to continue deadheading your blooms throughout July. This promotes a greater flourish of flowers and improves plant health.

3. Feeding and watering

With July typically being a much drier and warmer month in the garden, it’s no surprise that watering and feeding are two extremely important tasks at this time of year. Making sure to feed both fruiting and flowering plants during this period is a crucial garden care step that ensures the greatest harvest and encourages the biggest burst of floral colour throughout your garden. Dahlias and sweet peas are two example blooms that significantly benefit from a series of feeds throughout July.

4. Buxus care

If you have any Buxus growing within your garden then it is a great time to give your plants a trim and a healthy dose of feed. To prevent damage ensure to do this on a dry and cool day. Watch our quick guide below for more helpful tips and tricks!

5. In the kitchen garden…

With home-grown fruits and vegetables burgeoning beautifully, we adore how our kitchen gardens flourish at this time of year. Throughout July, make sure to keep planting lettuce and carrots for succession. When growing courgettes, our team recommend harvesting these vegetables when they reach a thumb size for the best taste.

6. Garden sunlight

If you’re not quite sure how much sunlight your garden receives then this time of year is the best time to find out. During July the sun is at its highest, therefore any areas that receive over 6 hours of sunlight a day can be classed as full sun.

7. New planting schemes

If you have recently established and settled any new plants into your garden then make sure to give these plants a good drink. This is particularly important during dry periods which are common during July.
