Gift Responsibility this Christmas

Climate change is a topic hot on everyone’s mind and even so more recently than ever. Everyone wants to do their part to stop the acceleration of climate change to build a better and brighter future for generations to come. But each of us has a part to play.

So, at Bloomsbury Home we consciously take steps to lessen our impact on the environment and hope to encourage our community to do so too. With that in mind, to make sure you’re giving gifts responsibly this Christmas, here’s just some of the ways we source our treasure trove of delights responsibly.

We start by finding brilliant artisan makers and creators, specifically, to light the way to a greener future by focusing on sustainability and cutting down on waste materials, whilst delivering high quality products that last.

One of our makers is a proud member of the 1% for the planet. This is a worldwide group of companies which have committed to donating 1% of their sales revenue to environmental organisations. This movement was created in 2002 by Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, founder of Blue Ribbon Flies.

Nearly 1,300 companies in more than 60 countries are members and already 200 million euros have been donated to environmental associations since the creation of 1% for the Planet. This collective of corporate philanthropists is now one of the most important sources of funding for environmental protection in the world.

Another of our craftspeople, who provides a selection of our ceramics, pride themselves on their stance on sustainability. All of their stoneware products are eco-friendly whilst being reusable and recyclable. These products are made with a high percentage of recycled materials such as clay and glazes, so they have a decreased usage of energy, natural resources and capital.

They have a continued focus on their development for eco-friendly products which is highlighted in their projects and collections.

Not only are their beautiful ceramics eco-friendly, but their packaging is as well. All of their amazing packaging is made from FCS-certified cardboard boxes (75% recycled cardboard) and then secured with recycled paper tape to add a finishing touch.

They are 100% plastic-free and can be reused for other purposes. Like one of our other suppliers they are active to find new sustainable alternatives to plastic and they have developed Ecocard. This is internal cardboard waste that is crushed and used to fill the packaging instead of dated and harmful plastic materials.

Our range of throws use only the finest natural fibres with an emphasis on sustainability, quality and traceability of yarns.

We are very privileged to work with so many producers who like us share the same values and thoughts regarding sustainability and ways we can prolong the effects of climate change. From earning the FSC®-label by the Forest Stewardship Council: a symbol of environmental, social and economic sustainability, to locally sourcing their materials to reduce their carbon footprint each and everyone of them is starting a brilliant movement and inturn doing their part for climate change.
